Sometimes it’s fun to do tarot in pairs!
So here’s a spread for exploring the energy between two people in a relationship.
You could use this for lovers, friendships, colleagues, couples, or partnerships within a poly relationships – anywhere where you have two people relating to each other*! You could also use this for exploring your relationship with your body, with your work, with your home… anything you are ‘in relationship with’.)
* My personal code of ethics dictates that I wouldn’t do this reading ‘about’ another person if they hadn’t consented.
The aim here is firstly to see you and the other person (or entity) as two separate beings, with different stories, different needs and secondly to understand the relationship as an entity in itself, and thus also something with a story of its own. I love using the model of you-me-us with my partner, because it helps us to allocate time and resources and check we’re in balance and that things feel ‘fair’. This spread can help unravel codependence, weird power dynamics, and strange feelings of neediness – and it can also just be a really nice way to check in with a lover or friend.
The Relationship Tarot Spread
I’m sharing two different versions of this spread – a longer ten-card version, and then a shorter three/four card version.
The spread has three elements:
Me – as in, the querent, the person leading the reading
You – the second person (or entity)
Us – the relationship itself – which here is just as important than the two individuals.
Shuffle the cards together, making sure both of you get a good go at those cards and can handle and shuffle them for as long as you/they want.
Lay the nine cards out in three columns, one row at a time. Start with yourself (‘me’) on the left, then the other person (‘you’) on the right, the the relationship itself in the centre.
1. Me – where I’m at
- What I’m doing or bringing
What I need from this relationship
4. You – where you’re at
- What you are doing or bringing
What you need from this relationship
7. Us – together, right now
- Where the relationship is heading
What the relationship needs from both of us
10. A word of advice.
Short on time?
You can of course do a three or four-card version of this spread, laying out the cards as follows:
4. Advice (optional)
That’s it! Have fun 🙂
I’m a 30-something writer, artist, tarot reader, and perpetual explorer of the space between thought, feeling, and action.
I believe that spirituality and ritual are for everybody. I’m about the journey, in all of its messy, non-linear, chaotic iterations. I am excited by anticapitalist business and living with my whole entire self present. I use tarot cards to bring forth hidden truth, and ritual to affirm my commitment, over and over, to my ever-shifting path.
