Creativity, courage, commitment: a tarot spread for the new moon

Last week, a friend of mine told me I don’t share my vulnerability enough. That I act like I had everything together, that I never show my shadow side. That it seemed like things come very easy to me.

I was surprised at what she said. I feel like I’ve done little lately but wail about how I don’t have my shit together, how I’m lost, how I don’t know what the heck I’m doing, and so on, and so on, and so on. I’m tumbling past the level of boring myself with it. I feel like if you read this blog you’re probably wondering when I’m going to stop going on about it all so we can get back to helpful tarot stuff. I also feel like I have no ‘right’ to go on like this like my life is so hard when I’m so very aware of how privileged and comfortable and easy my life is.

As I wrote this morning (and a bunch of times before that), a change is due. In fact, a process is already taking place. And I really need a tarot-card perspective on what’s happening right now.

This is a tarot spread I created for anyone who relates to what I’ve been saying – about losing touch with earth, about knowing there’s something inside that wants so badly to come out, about missing their creative selves, about just feeling goddamn lost right now. It’s about bringing all that stuff together and relating it back to fear, and getting past that fear, that fear of shadow and darkness, and figuring out what the heck this feeling is and how we can find the courage to release it and then to use it, to create, to express something, to get a damn grip.

So if you need this as much as I do right now, please help yourself.

Help yourself to this spread. Help yourself this new moon, this end-of-year-ish moment, this intention-setting, this return of the light, this seriousness of Saturn and blazing courage of Sagittarius. Help yourself to saying hello to your fears and goodbye to the ways they hold you back  I hope it helps you.

Creativity, courage, commitment: a tarot spread for the new moon

Card positions:

  1. Fear. What is that lurking in the shadows? What are you most afraid of? What is holding you back? Don’t be afraid. Bring it out, look it in the eye, accept it.
  2. Hope. What are you longing for? What is your goal? What is the relationship of this goal to your fear?
  3. Transform. Integrate your hopes and fears into you, into your life. How can you work with them to create something positive? How can you use them, what energy do you need?
  4. Release. What must you now let go of, in order to do this work?
  5. Ground. Set your intention here. Use this card to make a commitment to yourself, to doing this work. Do you need to welcome in a new energy or tap into what you already have? What will you do? How will you do it?
  6. Create. Make your intention real. Demonstrate your commitment to yourself. Be brave. Go forth. Create.

I can’t see writing a tarot post with spreads and NOT intertwine it with the most deepest and the most sparkling parts of you, that you express so beautifully, in your emotions and experiences. Fear, hope, create, etc in your spread. These are a part of you, of all of us. Tarot spreads – the physical act. Our feelings – the non-physical act. A team:)

  2. Geila says:

One more thought:) How can we separate ourselves from our passions? It’s humanly impossible unless you totally disconnect from yourself. If you only said, Here’s the next tarot spread, half the learning of it would be shadowy. Boring!

Last night I got together with a friend of mine for some heart-to-heart + tarot time; it was overdue and so painfully necessary and a LOT of shit came out (especially because I’m getting to know a new deck) but!! a lot of what is in this post is what came out during our night.
So you have absolutely perfect timing, Beth. Thank you so much for this. I can’t wait to pull my deck out tonight and dig through this spread xo

  4. Laura says:

Thank you for this! I have been feeling exactly the same. I just did the spread and really got a lot of messages I needed to hear today. xo

  5. I just did this reading and it was very powerful!! Just what I needed right now. The Tarot never ceases to amaze me. Now I need to commit and do – this is a great time for change. I am feeling blessed and positive.

Thank you for sharing, Beth! I’ll have the weekend to myself, with my birthday coming up on Sunday, so this will come in handy 🙂

  7. Rita says:

I love your insight! Your message resonates with me. I have been reading for more than 30 years ( a closet Tarot Reader until this year). I have always felt that the Tarot is one of the ways that the Universe can speak to us. It is amazing and wonderful the way the cards speak and send us messages to help heal our souls and to help us grow in our spirituality. I find that it is such a beautiful way to get to know myself at a deeper level. Thank You!

Awesome spread – and as others have said at a perfect time. Thank you for helping me shine a gentle light on the things that are holding me back and providing a vehicle for finding the perfect solution to let go of them. Now I feel I can give voice to the primal scream that’s been building for a while in terms of letting go of my fears and discover the treasure hiding underneath. Much love and gratitude.

  9. I just finished doing a reading with this spread, & it was one of the most powerful & affirming I’ve done in a long time. I know exactly what I need to do, & having this awareness on this auspicious day is going to be huge for this new cycle. I just wanted to say thank you, Beth, for both creating this spread & for always standing in the truth of where you’re at. you are so inspiring.

  10. Katzi says:

Great spread! After reading with it (and being totally blown away!), I like the idea of using this as a year-end spread, too. Like, what are your projections for the New Year ahead or possibly seasonally? Or maybe even by project? This could be a great starting point before embarking on a new (potentially life-changing) project or path! Thank you for sharing this! I feel like everyone will benefit from this! The energies have been so strong lately and this has provided much-needed clarity! xoxo

That’s great! I’m so glad you found it helpful Katzi, I agree it would work well at any kind of ‘new start/intention-setting’ time.

  11. Jo says:

Thanks for this it’s going to be a big help. I feel like I’ve stopped, like I’m waist high in mud! I’m not sure what has made me to be/feel so stuck so tightly. Tonight I will use this spread to explore what it might be and how I can step out of it! Thanks x
