Three is the magic number, right? With the Three of Pentacles, we can see why. Whilst the Three of Cups gives us community relationships, and Wands shows us the moment everything comes together ready to begin something, the Three of Pentacles is all about teamwork.
Yesterday, I drew the Six of Pentacles. It brought up questions around our own resources, and those available in the community – the energy we give to and take from the world in everything we do. The Three builds on this theme, looking at the roles each of us play in our communities.
Searching for images through my own decks and online, yet again, I’m turning to the Wild Unknown to illustrate my understanding of this card. As always, the stark imagery and clever use of colour make the point beautifully.
Red, yellow and blue – the three primary colours. And each one mixes with the others to form new colours. The three, when working together, become more than the sum of their parts…in fact, we get a rainbow! Sweet.

Yesterday I wondered about the impact of my actions on the world around me. Today I wonder might be achieved if I’m prepared to work with others. If I meld my skills and knowledge with others, what cool things might we achieve?
Whilst the Waite-Smith image ain’t my favourite depiction of the Three of Pentacles (three blokes building a cathedral), it still enhances my understanding of the card. Bridget of Biddy Tarot reads it this way:
The apprentice appears to be discussing his progress so far with two architects and even though he is less experienced, the architects listen carefully as they value his opinion and his specialist knowledge. There is also an acknowledgement that this young man is an essential contributor to the completion of the cathedral and the architects want to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
This reminds us that everyone has a role in our communities. All are welcome, each person adds something unique to the mix and strengthens the whole.
I’m a 30-something writer, artist, tarot reader, and perpetual explorer of the space between thought, feeling, and action.
I believe that spirituality and ritual are for everybody. I’m about the journey, in all of its messy, non-linear, chaotic iterations. I am excited by anticapitalist business and living with my whole entire self present. I use tarot cards to bring forth hidden truth, and ritual to affirm my commitment, over and over, to my ever-shifting path.
